From the treasure troves of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Royal Selangor has recreated their timeless pieces including the antiquated finish. Each piece exudes the rich but subdued patina of pewter resembling the great creations of the past.
Neo-Classicism was a style that arose from 1760 till 1820 during the Georgian era. In Europe it began as a reaction against the frivolity and excess of the Baroque and Rococo era. This revival of interest in the ancient Greek and Roman world had also been due to archaeological discoveries of the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Architects such as Robert Adam led the taste for the Neo-Classical style in the late 18th century. The style became dominant in all areas of design with completely integrated schemas of interior design, including furniture, furnishings, objects and decoration. Neo-Classicism aimed to evoke a feeling of ancient world through the use of a coherent set of architectural forms and ornament. Designs relied on delicacy of form and the use of a limited range of small elegant motifs such as laurel swags, palm leaves and wreaths.
Symmetry and order , characteristics of Neo-Classical style, are the striking features of Royal Selangor's 'Inspired' pieces. Elegant forms and fluting can be seen in these simple designs. A restrained use of ornamentation allows one to appreciate the beauty and charm of pewter.
In recent years, candles and oil lamps have become increasingly popular. Besides illuminating a room, they help to create a wonderful ambience. As with the rest of the V&A Inspired collection, the candle holder and oil lamps are simple in design.
In tradition of the 'Inspired' pieces, each piece is faithfully created in a subdued but rich finish resembling the great productions of the past. Symbolising the collaboration with the V&A Museum, every piece is marked with the Royal Selangor trademark, the V&A logo and the year of manufacture. |
